Species profile

About this species

The Grey Langur, also known as the Hanuman Langur, is a large Old World monkey native to the Indian subcontinent. It is characterised by its pale grey fur, black face, hands & feet, and a long tail often carried in a distinctive curl. These highly social primates live in troops & are closely associated with human settlements, temples & forested areas across South Asia.

Habitat

Grey Langurs inhabit a wide range of environments including tropical & subtropical forests, dry scrubland, agricultural land & urban areas. They are commonly found across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh, often living close to human settlements & Hindu temples where they are considered sacred.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon light offers the best conditions for photography, as langurs are most active during these cooler periods. The dry season from October to March is ideal across much of their range, when foliage is thinner & visibility is improved.

Approach

Approach troops slowly & calmly to avoid startling them, as habituated individuals near temples & villages offer the best close-up opportunities. Use a telephoto lens in the range of 300-400mm to capture natural behaviour without intrusion. Focus on interaction between adults & juveniles, as playful & grooming behaviour provides compelling & dynamic compositions.
