Indian Gaur Photography Holidays

Species profile

About this species

The Indian Gaur, also known as the Indian Bison, is the largest extant bovine species in the world, native to South & Southeast Asia. Adult males are characterised by their dark brown to black colouring, muscular build, and distinctive white or yellowish stockings on their lower legs. They are a vulnerable species, threatened by habitat loss, hunting, & disease transmitted from domestic cattle.

Habitat

Tropical & subtropical moist broadleaf forests, grasslands, & forest clearings across India, Nepal, Bhutan, Southeast Asia, & parts of China - often found near water sources & salt licks.

Best time

Early morning hours between 6am & 9am during the cool dry season from November to March, when Gaur are most active & visible in open grasslands & forest edges.

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain a safe distance while capturing detailed portraits of these powerful animals. Position yourself downwind & remain still, as Gaur have a keen sense of smell & will retreat if disturbed. Early morning light in forest clearings provides excellent contrast to highlight their dark colouring against softer backgrounds.
