Species profile

About this species

The Grizzled Skipper is a small but distinctively patterned butterfly found across much of Europe & parts of Asia. It has dark brown wings marked with a characteristic chequered pattern of white spots, giving it a grizzled appearance. It is one of the earliest skippers to emerge in spring & is considered a priority species for conservation in the UK due to significant population declines.

Habitat

Typically found in sheltered, south-facing grassland, woodland clearings & rides, chalk downland, & disturbed ground with short vegetation & areas of bare earth

Best time

Late April to early June is the prime season, with warm sunny mornings between 10am & 1pm being ideal when adults are most active & basking

Approach

Approach slowly & low to the ground as this species is easily disturbed, using a macro lens to capture the intricate chequered wing pattern in detail. Photograph on warm sunny days when the butterfly is actively basking with wings spread flat on bare ground or low vegetation, giving excellent opportunities for top-down shots. Use a shallow depth of field to isolate the subject against a soft background, focussing carefully on the wing markings for maximum impact.
