About this species
The Large Skipper is a medium-sized butterfly found across much of Europe & Asia, recognised by its distinctive golden-orange wings with a subtle chequered pattern. Males display a prominent dark sex brand across the forewings, used during territorial displays. It is a robust, fast-flying species often seen basking with its wings held in a characteristic half-open position.
Woodland edges, hedgerows, rough grassland & bramble patches, particularly where tall grasses such as cock's-foot are present for larval foodplants.

Late May to August, with peak activity in June & July. Warm sunny mornings between 9am & 11am are ideal, when butterflies are basking & less likely to fly.
Approach basking individuals slowly & carefully on warm sunny mornings when they are less alert & more likely to remain still. Use a macro lens or close-focusing telephoto to capture the intricate wing patterns & the characteristic angled wing posture. Look for individuals perched on prominent grass stems or bramble leaves, as these are favoured basking & territorial spots that offer clean backgrounds.
