About this species

The Gyrfalcon is the largest of all falcon species, found across Arctic & subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It displays a range of colour morphs from near-white to dark grey-brown, making it a striking & variable subject. Renowned for its speed & powerful flight, it is a highly skilled predator that hunts ptarmigan & other birds across open tundra landscapes.

Habitat

Open Arctic & subarctic tundra, coastal cliffs, rocky mountain slopes, & boreal forest edges across Greenland, Iceland, northern Canada, Alaska & northern Eurasia.

Best time

Winter months offer the best opportunity to photograph Gyrfalcons, particularly when birds move southward from their Arctic breeding grounds. Early morning & late afternoon provide the softest light, which complements the subtle tonal variations in the bird's plumage. The breeding season from April to June in Arctic regions can also be rewarding for those able to travel to remote locations.

Approach

Use a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm to capture sharp detail from a respectful distance, as these birds are sensitive to human disturbance. Position yourself low to the ground to achieve an eye-level perspective, which creates a more engaging & intimate composition. Scout known perching spots such as rocky outcrops & cliff ledges where Gyrfalcons regularly rest between hunts, allowing you to pre-focus & prepare your settings in advance.
