About this species
The Hazel Grouse is a small, compact bird of the grouse family, found across the boreal & mixed forests of Europe & Asia. It has intricately patterned plumage of grey, brown & chestnut tones that provide excellent camouflage among woodland undergrowth. The species is notably secretive & tends to remain hidden within dense forest cover, making it a challenging subject for wildlife observers.

Early morning during spring & autumn offers the best chances, as birds are most active & vocal around dawn. Spring is particularly rewarding when males are calling to attract females.
Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain distance & avoid disturbing the bird, as Hazel Grouse are easily startled & will flush into dense cover. Move slowly & quietly through suitable habitat, pausing frequently to listen for their thin, high-pitched whistling calls which can help locate individuals. Opt for a wide aperture to isolate the bird from the busy forest background & ensure your shutter speed is high enough to freeze any sudden movement.
