About this species
The moose is the largest member of the deer family, recognised by its massive body, long legs, and distinctive broad, palmate antlers found on males. Native to boreal & mixed deciduous forests across North America, Europe, & Asia, moose are well adapted to cold climates & are strong swimmers. Despite their size, they can move silently through dense woodland & are known to wade into lakes & rivers to feed on aquatic vegetation.
Boreal & temperate mixed forests, typically near lakes, rivers, marshes, & wetlands across northern North America, Scandinavia, Russia, & parts of central Asia.

Photography notes
Early morning & late evening during late September to early October coinciding with the rut, or late spring when cows & calves are active near water. Overcast days provide soft, even light well suited to capturing the dark fur of the moose without harsh shadows.
Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a safe distance while capturing detailed portraits of this large & potentially dangerous animal. Position yourself near lakes, rivers, or wetland edges during feeding periods, as moose frequently wade into water offering dramatic reflections & dynamic compositions. Shoot in burst mode to capture movement & always be aware of your surroundings, as moose can charge with little warning.
