About this species
The Bighorn Sheep is a large North American ungulate named for its impressive curved horns, which can weigh up to 14 kg in males. Males, known as rams, are significantly larger than females and engage in dramatic head-butting contests during the rut. They are highly adapted to rugged, mountainous terrain, possessing specialised hooves that provide exceptional grip on rocky surfaces.
Bighorn Sheep inhabit rocky mountain slopes, alpine meadows, & desert canyons across western North America. They favour terrain with steep cliffs & rocky outcrops that provide both escape routes from predators & mineral licks essential to their diet.

Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon light during autumn (October to November) is ideal, as the rut brings increased activity & dramatic interactions between rams. Winter months can also offer rewarding photography when sheep descend to lower elevations.
Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detailed shots without disturbing the animals, as they can be skittish on open terrain. Position yourself below the animals on slopes & ridgelines to achieve striking compositions with the sky or cliffs as a backdrop. During the autumn rut, focus on the interactions between rams, as the clashing behaviour provides dramatic & dynamic action shots.
