Species profile

About this species

The North American river otter is a semi-aquatic mammal belonging to the family Mustelidae, found across much of Canada & the United States. It has a streamlined body, dense waterproof fur, & webbed feet that make it a highly agile swimmer. River otters are playful & social animals, often seen sliding down muddy or snowy banks & hunting fish in rivers, lakes, & coastal waterways.

Habitat

River otters inhabit freshwater environments including rivers, streams, lakes, & marshes, as well as coastal estuaries & marine shorelines. They favour areas with abundant fish, clean water, & dense bankside vegetation or rocky cover for denning & shelter.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon offer the best light & coincide with peak feeding activity. Late autumn through early spring can be particularly rewarding as reduced vegetation improves visibility & otters are more actively foraging.

Approach

Position yourself low to the water's edge to achieve eye-level shots that create a more intimate & engaging perspective. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the otter's quick, unpredictable movements in & around the water. Scout known feeding or resting sites in advance & remain patient & still, as otters can be easily disturbed by sudden movement or noise.
