About this species
The Rough-legged Buzzard is a large bird of prey that breeds in the Arctic & subarctic regions of Europe, Asia & North America. It is named for its feathered legs, which extend down to the base of the toes, an adaptation to cold climates. During winter it migrates southward to open farmland & moorland, where it can often be seen hovering over fields in search of small mammals.
Breeds on Arctic tundra & rocky cliff faces in northern regions. During winter it frequents open lowland habitats including farmland, coastal marshes, moorland & river valleys where voles & other small mammals are abundant.

Winter months from November to February offer the best opportunities, as birds have migrated south to accessible lowland areas. Early morning light provides warm tones & the birds are often most active during the first few hours after dawn.
Position yourself near open farmland or coastal marshes during winter months when the birds are more approachable & regularly hunt in predictable areas. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm to capture sharp detail whilst maintaining a respectful distance, as the birds can be wary of close approach. Anticipate hovering behaviour by watching the bird as it quarters low over fields, allowing you to pre-focuss & capture crisp flight shots against a clean sky background.
