Species profile

About this species

The Surucua Trogon is a medium-sized bird belonging to the family Trogonidae, found in South America. Males display striking plumage with a vibrant green head & upper parts, a red belly, and a distinctive white & black barred tail. Females are more subdued in colouring, with a brown head replacing the green, though they retain the characteristic red underparts.

Habitat

The Surucua Trogon inhabits humid Atlantic Forest, subtropical woodlands, and forest edges across south-eastern Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, & Uruguay, showing a preference for areas with dense canopy cover & fruiting trees.

Best time

Early morning hours shortly after dawn during the austral spring & summer months (October to February) offer the best chances, as birds are most active & vocal during this period.

Approach

Position yourself quietly near fruiting trees where trogons perch motionless for extended periods, allowing time to compose a well-framed shot. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain distance & avoid disturbing the bird, as they can be surprisingly tolerant when undisturbed. Focus on capturing the vivid contrast between the bird's green upper parts & red belly by shooting in soft, diffused light to avoid harsh shadows obscuring plumage detail.
