Species profile

About this species

The Tibetan Wild Yak is a large bovid native to the Himalayan region of central Asia, particularly the Tibetan Plateau. It is one of the largest wild animals in the world, with thick, shaggy coats that allow it to survive in extreme cold at altitudes exceeding 6,000 metres. Wild populations are classified as Vulnerable due to hunting & habitat loss, making sightings a rare & rewarding experience.

Habitat

High-altitude alpine tundra & cold steppe grasslands of the Tibetan Plateau, typically found between 4,000 & 6,100 metres above sea level, where sparse vegetation & extreme cold deter most other large mammals.

Best time

Late spring to early summer (May to June) offers the best conditions, as the weather is more stable & the animals are active in open grasslands. Early morning light provides warm tones & long shadows that complement the dark colouring of the yak's coat.

Approach

Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to photograph these animals safely from a distance without disturbing their natural behaviour. Approach slowly & downwind, as yaks have a keen sense of smell & will move away if they detect human presence. Shooting at a low angle against the vast open plateau creates a dramatic sense of scale & emphasises the rugged grandeur of both the animal & its environment.

During our photography holidays, the Tibetan Wild Yak is often photographed alongside Black-necked Crane, Blue Sheep, Brown Bear, Himalayan Blue Sheep, Himalayan Griffon, & Himalayan Marmot.
