Best time

Early morning hours offer the best light & activity, as hummingbirds are most actively feeding at dawn. The austral spring & summer months - roughly September through February - provide the highest activity levels & the most vibrant plumage for photography.

Approach

Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s to freeze the rapid wing beats & capture sharp detail in the wings. Position yourself near flowering plants or feeders frequented by the species & pre-focus on a favoured perch or bloom to anticipate the bird's arrival. A telephoto lens in the range of 300-500mm will allow you to maintain a respectful distance while still filling the frame with the bird.
