Embark on an unforgettable 7 night photographic adventure into the pristine wilderness of British Columbia’s Cariboo region with NaturesLens! Led by David & Pui Hang, this extremely special trip – Wolves, Lynx & Winter Wildlife of Canada – promises thrilling encounters with some of the most elusive & majestic creatures of the snow-laden forests. Set in the remote Chilcotin Plateau, this is a land of dramatic landscapes, frozen lakes, & dense boreal forests – a true stronghold for Canada’s iconic winter wildlife.

The Wolves, Lynx & Winter Wildlife of Canada Trip Promises a Wilderness Experience Like No Other

Your journey begins at Williams Lake, from there we transfer you to our lodge for the week, a secluded haven nestled on the shores of Eagle Lake, surrounded by the towering Niut Mountain Range. This region is part of traditional Secwépemc (Shuswap) First Nation territory, where vast wilderness stretches uninterrupted, offering some of the best wildlife viewing in British Columbia.

Each morning, witness the sunrise ignite the snow-capped peaks, casting golden light across the frozen expanse of Eagle Lake. The silence of this untouched landscape is broken only by the distant calls of ravens or the crunch of snow under a lynx’s paws. This is raw, untamed nature – a paradise for photographers with a passion for wildlife & the great outdoors.

Explore the Chilcotin’s Frozen Realm

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll transport you deep into the Chilcotin’s boreal forests & subalpine valleys, where snow drapes the landscape in thick, crystalline blankets. Your private, heated hide will be strategically placed in areas frequented by Canada lynx – masters of stealth that thrive in these deep-snow habitats.

The Cariboo Mountains & surrounding plateaus are part of a critical wildlife corridor, home not only to the Canada Lynx but also to:

  • Timber wolves – Packs roam these forests, their tracks often visible in fresh snow.

  • Red foxes & fishers – Agile & curious, they dart between the spruce & pine.

  • Moose & snowshoe hares – Vital prey species that shape the behaviour of their predators.

  • Great grey owls & boreal owls – Silent hunters of the winter woods.

The Lodge – Your Wilderness Retreat

After each day’s photography, we will return to the lodge, a rustic yet comfortable base, where warm meals, hot drinks, & a crackling fireplace await.

The lodge sits in complete solitude, with no cell service but satellite internet for essential connectivity. Evenings are spent sharing stories, reviewing images, & planning the next day’s adventure.

Hero Species Experience

Why is the Chilcotin Plateau special for Canada lynx photography?

The Chilcotin Plateau's deep-snow boreal forests provide ideal habitat for Canada lynx, who are perfectly adapted to these conditions with their large, snowshoe-like paws. The strategically positioned heated hides are placed in areas regularly frequented by lynx, offering photographers opportunities to capture these elusive cats in their natural winter environment against pristine snow-covered backdrops.

Wildlife Behaviours

What lynx & wolf behaviours can I photograph during the trip?

You can photograph Canada lynx stalking snowshoe hares across frozen clearings & moving silently through snow-laden spruce forests. Timber wolves can be photographed trotting through deep snow in the boreal forest, with their tracks often visible in fresh snow, creating compelling storytelling opportunities alongside direct wildlife encounters.

Wildlife Species

What wildlife can I expect to photograph?

Species regularly photographed include Canada Lynx, Timber Wolf, Wolverine, Red Fox, Fisher, Moose, Great Grey Owl, Boreal Owl & Snowshoe Hare. The snow-covered landscape creates dramatic contrast, making wildlife stand out against the white forest backdrop. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed.

Photography Time

How much time do we spend in the photography hides?

This is a dedicated hide-based photography holiday, with photography sessions from day 2 to day 6 in prime lynx territory. Each day centres around positioned hides in areas frequented by Canada lynx & other winter wildlife, maximising opportunities for undisturbed photography in optimal lighting conditions.

Hide Setup

How do the heated photography hides work?

The heated hides are strategically positioned in areas regularly frequented by Canada lynx & other winter wildlife. Designed specifically for winter wildlife photography, they allow photographers to work comfortably in sub-zero temperatures while maintaining close proximity to natural wildlife corridors & feeding areas.

Group Size Benefits

What are the benefits of a 4-photographer group?

The 4-photographer limit ensures everyone has sufficient space in the heated hides, receives personalised guidance from David & Pui Hang Miles, & enjoys a more relaxed photographic experience. The small group size allows for flexible positioning & individual attention during hide sessions.

Winter Conditions

Why is winter the best time for photographing these species?

Winter conditions make wildlife photography exceptional as animals stand out dramatically against snow-covered landscapes, tracks are visible in fresh snow for storytelling, & wildlife congregates around reliable food sources. The snow also reveals animal behaviour patterns & creates clean, uncluttered backgrounds for powerful compositions.

Accommodation

What is the accommodation like?

You'll stay at a secluded lodge on the shores of Eagle Lake for 6 nights, surrounded by the Niut Mountain Range. Single occupancy accommodation is included as standard with full board meals. The lodge provides a warm, comfortable base with no cell service except essential satellite internet, allowing complete focus on nature & photography.

Equipment Requirements

What camera equipment should I bring?

Bring a camera capable of high-ISO performance for winter conditions, telephoto lenses suitable for wildlife photography, spare batteries & memory cards. The heated hides allow comfortable operation of equipment in sub-zero temperatures. Detailed equipment recommendations will be provided before departure.

Skill Level

Do I need advanced photography skills for this trip?

No advanced skills are required. David & Pui Hang Miles along with local guides provide experienced guidance suitable for photographers of all levels during the hide-based sessions. The controlled hide environment allows time to compose shots & receive personalised instruction.

Trip Inclusions

What's included in the trip cost?

Trip cost includes 6 nights at the Eagle Lake lodge, all meals on a full board basis, guiding by David & Pui Hang Miles, all hide sessions in prime lynx territory, airport transfers from Williams Lake & heated hide access. Single occupancy accommodation is included as standard.

Wolverine Photography

What makes this location special for wolverine photography?

Wolverines are among the most elusive North American predators, but the Chilcotin's vast wilderness & strategic bait stations at heated photography blinds create rare opportunities to photograph these powerful scavengers. The region's undisturbed boreal forests provide one of the few accessible locations for wolverine photography.
