Lobo Valley

NaturesLens visits Lobo Valley on small-group wildlife photography holidays in Tanzania, with time here planned around African Elephant, African Leopard, African Lion, Blue Wildebeest and Cape Buffalo rather than general sightseeing. Current itineraries using Lobo Valley include Lions of the Serengeti, with photography shaped around boat-based and landscape and behaviour photography sessions. Tucked away in the northern reaches of the Serengeti National Park, Lobo Valley occupies one of the most remote & scenically dramatic corners of this iconic Tanzanian ecosystem. The landscape is defined by rugged granite kopjes rising from open savannah, interspersed with woodland thickets & seasonal rivers that draw wildlife throughout the year. Its relative inaccessibility compared to the busier southern & central Serengeti means the valley retains a wild, undisturbed character, offering sweeping views across the plains toward the Kenyan border. This rocky, well-watered terrain provides both cover & vantage points for predators, while the surrounding grasslands support the great herds for which the northern Serengeti is renowned. Lobo Valley hosts an impressive cross-section of East African savannah wildlife, anchored by the presence of all three major predators: African lion, leopard, & spotted hyena, each exploiting the kopjes & woodland edges for shelter & ambush opportunities. Large herbivores are well represented, including African elephant, Cape buffalo, giraffe, & plains zebra, alongside migratory grazers such as blue wildebeest, Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, & topi, many of which pass through during the annual migration. Impala & warthog frequent the transitional zones between grassland & thicket, while olive baboon & vervet monkey are commonly encountered around rocky outcrops & riverine vegetation, offering engaging opportunities to observe primate social behaviour at close range.
