NaturesLens runs winter wildlife photography tours in Japan, led by David Miles, Ian Roberts & Pui Hang Miles. The trip is built around Hokkaido’s Red-crowned Cranes, Whooper Swans, Steller’s Sea Eagles & White-tailed Eagles, with Japanese Macaques on mainland Japan. Eastern Hokkaido In eastern Hokkaido the subjects are Red-crowned Cranes, Whooper Swans, Steller’s Sea Eagles & White-tailed Eagles. Opportunities are shaped by snow, water, coastal light & changing weather, with boat-based eagle sessions & repeat visits so we can respond to behaviour rather than rely on a single attempt. Mainland Japan: the macaques Japanese Macaques offer a different pace: social behaviour, expressions, snow & steam. It is a chance to slow down & concentrate on storytelling rather than action. What to expect from the photography Exposure in snow: keeping whites clean without losing detail, & reading the histogram when light changes quickly. Autofocus for moving birds: settings & techniques for eagles in flight & dancing cranes. Positioning & composition: using light direction, backgrounds & weather to simplify frames.
