About this species
The Ezo Red Fox is a subspecies of red fox native to Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan. It is slightly larger than other red fox subspecies & is known for its thick, vibrant coat which helps it survive the cold Hokkaido winters. The species is relatively tolerant of human presence, making it a popular subject for wildlife photographers visiting the region.
The Ezo Red Fox inhabits a range of environments across Hokkaido, including forests, grasslands, farmland edges & sub-alpine meadows. It is also frequently encountered near human settlements & along roadsides, particularly in rural & semi-rural areas.

Winter months from December to February offer the most visually striking conditions, with snow-covered landscapes & thick fur on display. Early morning & late afternoon provide soft, warm light that enhances the fox's coat colours.
Visit Hokkaido in winter when snow provides a clean white background that contrasts beautifully with the fox's rich red & orange fur. Approach slowly & quietly, keeping a low profile by crouching or lying on the ground to achieve eye-level shots that feel intimate & engaging. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture natural behaviour without disturbing the animal, & be patient near open fields or roadsides where foxes are commonly spotted hunting.
