Species profile

About this species

The Ezo Sika Deer is a subspecies of sika deer native to Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan. It is larger than other sika deer subspecies, with a thick coat that helps it survive the cold winters of the region. Males carry impressive antlers & display a distinctive spotted coat pattern that fades during winter months.

Habitat

The Ezo Sika Deer inhabits the forests, grasslands & alpine meadows of Hokkaido, Japan. It is commonly found in mixed deciduous & coniferous woodland, as well as open shrubland & the edges of cultivated fields, particularly in national parks such as Shiretoko & Daisetsuzan.

Best time

Autumn (October to November) is the best season, particularly during the rutting period when stags are active & displaying. Early morning & late afternoon provide the most favourable light & the highest levels of deer activity.

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture close-up shots without disturbing the deer, as they can be skittish in open terrain. Early morning light in autumn provides excellent conditions for photographing stags during the rut, when they are most active & visible. Position yourself downwind & wear muted, natural colours to blend into the landscape & avoid alerting the deer to your presence.
