Species profile

About this species

The Steller's Sea Eagle is one of the largest & most powerful birds of prey in the world, with a wingspan reaching up to 2.5 metres & a weight of up to 9 kilograms. It is characterised by its striking dark brown & white plumage, massive bright yellow-orange bill, & distinctive white patches on the shoulders & thighs. The species is native to coastal northeastern Asia, primarily breeding in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula & wintering in Japan.

Habitat

Steller's Sea Eagles are found along rocky sea coasts, large river valleys, & lakeshores in northeastern Asia. They favour areas with abundant fish & are commonly seen along the Sea of Okhotsk coastline, river estuaries in Kamchatka, & the frozen & semi-frozen waterways of Hokkaido during winter migration.

Best time

Winter months from December to March in Hokkaido, Japan offer the best photographic opportunities, particularly during early morning when eagles are most active at feeding sites. The low winter sun provides warm, directional light that highlights the bird's dramatic colouring.

Approach

Position yourself near rivers or coastal areas in Hokkaido, Japan during winter, where large concentrations of these eagles gather to feed on fish at unfrozen waterways - this provides excellent opportunities for close-range shots. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1600s to freeze the motion of these powerful birds in flight, particularly when they dive to catch fish. A telephoto lens of 500mm or longer is recommended, & shooting in the golden hour light of early morning will enhance the warm tones of the eagle's striking yellow-orange bill & the contrast of its bold plumage.
