Northern Gannet at Fair Isle

Fair Isle's isolation in the North Sea, sitting midway between Orkney and Shetland as their southernmost outpost, has shaped a dramatic coastline of towering sea cliffs and rugged sandstone stacks well suited to photographing Northern Gannets. Visiting in June offers the best opportunity to work these cliff faces and stacks, using the rugged terrain to frame birds against the sea below. Those joining the Atlantic Puffins of Fair Isle holiday will find the same cliffs and stacks provide ample opportunity to turn a camera toward the island's Gannets as well. Patience with the island's sandstone ledges and stack formations will reward photographers with striking compositions of this species against Fair Isle's rugged backdrop.
