About this species
The African Wild Dog is a highly social canid native to sub-Saharan Africa, recognised by its mottled coat of black, white, & yellow patches which is unique to each individual. They live in close-knit packs & are renowned for their cooperative hunting strategies & remarkably high success rates compared to other large predators. As one of Africa's most endangered carnivores, their populations have declined sharply due to habitat loss, human conflict, & disease.
African Wild Dogs inhabit a range of open & semi-arid environments including savanna grasslands, open woodland, & bushveld. They require large home ranges & are most commonly found in areas with low human population density across countries such as Botswana, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, & South Africa.

Photography notes
The dry season from May to October offers the best opportunities, as reduced vegetation improves visibility & animals concentrate around water sources. Early morning & late afternoon coincide with the pack's most active hunting periods, providing excellent golden light for photography.
Position yourself near a den site during the denning season for close & intimate behavioural shots, as the pack will return repeatedly to the same location. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the action during hunts & play sessions, as these animals move with remarkable speed & energy. A telephoto lens of 400mm or longer is recommended to maintain a respectful distance while still achieving frame-filling portraits of individuals.
