Anhinga Photography Holidays

Anhinga anhinga

Explore our Anhinga photography holidays in Costa Rica & the United States, built around field time with this species during the best seasonal conditions. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Anhinga is a large waterbird found across the Americas, known for its distinctive snake-like neck & habit of swimming with its body submerged. Unlike most waterbirds, its feathers are not fully waterproof, which reduces buoyancy & allows it to dive efficiently for fish. After swimming, it can often be seen perched with wings spread wide to dry its plumage in the sun.

Habitat

Anhingas inhabit warm freshwater lakes, rivers, swamps, & coastal estuaries, favouring areas with overhanging trees & vegetation where they can perch, roost, & nest close to calm, shallow water.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon provide the best light for photography. The species is most active & visible year-round in warmer climates, though spring & summer nesting colonies offer outstanding opportunities for behavioural shots.

Approach

Look for Anhingas perched with wings outstretched in good morning or afternoon light, as this behaviour offers excellent opportunities for dramatic, well-lit portraits. Position yourself at water level if possible to achieve a more engaging perspective & to capture reflections in calm water. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s when photographing the bird diving or in flight to freeze its motion & capture sharp detail in the wings.

Trips featuring Anhinga

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Anhinga is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Anhinga in Costa Rica & the United States. During our photography holidays, the Anhinga is often photographed alongside Roseate Spoonbill, Agami Heron, Amazon Kingfisher, Bald Eagle, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, & Black-necked Stilt. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year.
