Species profile

About this species

The Double-crested Cormorant is a large waterbird found across North America, recognisable by its distinctive orange-yellow facial skin & throat pouch. Adults develop two small tufts of feathers on their head during breeding season, giving the species its common name. They are strong swimmers that dive underwater to catch fish, & are frequently observed perching with their wings spread to dry their feathers.

Habitat

Double-crested Cormorants are found along coastlines, rivers, lakes & reservoirs across North America. They favour areas with abundant fish & suitable perching or nesting sites such as rocky shores, piers, trees near water & man-made structures.

Best time

Early morning light during the breeding season from April to June offers the best conditions, as birds are active around nesting colonies & display their most vivid plumage. Overcast days can also reduce harsh shadows on the dark plumage.

Approach

Position yourself near rocky outcrops or jetties where cormorants regularly perch to dry their wings, as this behaviour offers extended shooting opportunities with the bird remaining still. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture fine detail in the facial skin & plumage without disturbing the bird. Shooting during the breeding season allows you to capture the striking crests & vivid colouration of the facial skin at its most vibrant.
