Species profile

About this species

The Crested Caracara is a large, striking bird of prey belonging to the falcon family Falconidae, recognised by its bold black & white plumage, bright orange-red facial skin, and distinctive flat-topped black crest. It is commonly found across open & semi-open habitats from the southern the United States through Central & South America. Unlike most falcons, it is largely terrestrial, often seen walking on the ground in search of carrion & small prey.

Habitat

Open & semi-open landscapes including grasslands, pastures, scrublands, and savanna, often near wetlands or agricultural land where carrion & prey are readily available.

Best time

Early morning during the dry season, particularly from November through March, when birds are most active & visibility across open habitats is at its best.

Approach

Position yourself low to the ground when the bird is foraging, as this produces a more engaging eye-level perspective & flattering background separation. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze movement when the bird takes flight or interacts with other scavengers. Scout roadsides & open ranchland early in the morning when birds are most active & the warm light enhances the contrast of their bold plumage.

Trips featuring Crested Caracara

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Crested Caracara is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Crested Caracara in the United States. During our photography holidays, the Crested Caracara is often photographed alongside Anhinga, Bald Eagle, Black-necked Stilt, Burrowing Owl, Double-crested Cormorant, & Glossy Ibis. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year.
