It inhabits shallow wetlands, mudflats, & coastal lagoons where it forages for aquatic invertebrates. It is a highly vocal & territorial species, often aggressive in defending its nesting site.

Best time

Early morning during spring & summer breeding season offers the best light & most active behaviour, including courtship displays & chick-rearing activity.

Approach

Approach wetland edges slowly & use a low angle to capture eye-level shots that emphasise the bird's elegant proportions & vivid leg colour. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze motion when the bird is actively foraging or displaying. A telephoto lens of 400mm or longer is recommended to maintain a respectful distance & avoid disturbing nesting birds.
