Species profile

About this species

The Bar-headed Goose is a large migratory waterfowl recognised by the distinctive black bars on the back of its white head. It breeds at high-altitude lakes in Central Asia, particularly in Tibet & Mongolia, and is renowned for its extraordinary migrations over the Himalayas. It is considered one of the world's highest-flying birds, capable of crossing mountain peaks exceeding 7,000 metres.

Habitat

Bar-headed Geese breed on high-altitude lakes & wetlands in Central Asia, typically above 4,000 metres. Outside the breeding season they are found on lowland rivers, lakes, flooded agricultural fields & estuaries across the Indian subcontinent & Southeast Asia.

Best time

Early morning light during the breeding season from May to July offers the best conditions, as birds are active around lakeshores. Migration periods in spring & autumn also provide excellent opportunities when large flocks gather at wetland stopover sites.

Approach

Approach breeding colonies at high-altitude lakes slowly & from a low angle to avoid disturbing the birds and to achieve a flattering perspective. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture close-up detail of the striking head markings without encroaching on the birds' space. During migration stopovers, position yourself near water edges at dawn when the geese are most active & the soft light enhances the contrast between the white head & dark bars.
