Ganges River Dolphin Photography Holidays

Platanista gangetica

Species profile

About this species

The Ganges River Dolphin is a freshwater cetacean found primarily in the Ganges-Brahmaputra river system of the Indian subcontinent. It is functionally blind, relying almost entirely on echolocation to navigate & hunt in the murky, sediment-rich waters it inhabits. Listed as endangered, it is one of the world's rarest dolphins & serves as an indicator species for the health of river ecosystems.

Habitat

Freshwater rivers & tributaries of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna & Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems across India, Bangladesh, Nepal & Bhutan, favouring deep, slow-moving water near river bends & confluences.

Best time

Early morning during the dry season months of October to March, when lower water levels concentrate dolphins in deeper river channels & visibility conditions are at their most favourable.

Approach

Position yourself on a low boat or riverbank & remain patient, as the dolphin surfaces briefly & unpredictably to breathe - a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s is essential to freeze motion. Use a telephoto lens of 300mm or longer to maintain a respectful distance whilst achieving a close composition, & pre-focus on the area of water where the dolphin has been surfacing. Shoot during the golden hours of early morning when soft light enhances the texture of the water & reduces harsh reflections on the surface.
