Species profile

About this species

The Indian Hornbill, also known as the Great Hornbill, is one of the largest members of the hornbill family, notable for its striking yellow & black casque atop its large bill. Found across the Indian subcontinent & Southeast Asia, it plays a vital role in forest ecosystems as a seed disperser. The species is characterised by its loud, distinctive calls & impressive wingspan that can reach up to 150 cm.

Habitat

Dense tropical & subtropical moist broadleaf forests, particularly in hilly & mountainous regions up to 1500m elevation. Strongly associated with old-growth forests containing large trees suitable for nesting & fruiting trees for foraging.

Best time

Early morning hours between 6am & 9am offer the best light & activity levels. The breeding season between January & April provides opportunities to photograph courtship behaviour & nesting activity.

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detail from a distance without disturbing the bird. Position yourself near fruiting fig trees early in the morning when hornbills are most active & the light is soft & warm. Shoot in burst mode to capture flight shots, as the birds produce a loud whooshing sound with their wings that can give you a moment of warning before take-off.
