Leptoptilos dubius

Species profile

About this species

The Greater Adjutant Stork is a large wading bird belonging to the stork family Ciconiidae, found primarily in South & Southeast Asia. It is one of the largest storks in the world, recognised by its massive wedge-shaped bill, bare pinkish-orange head & neck, and a distinctive pendulous neck pouch. The species is critically endangered, with the largest remaining populations concentrated in Assam, India & Cambodia.

Habitat

The Greater Adjutant favours wetlands, floodplains, marshes & large rivers, but is also commonly found foraging at open rubbish dumps & carcass sites near human settlements, particularly in lowland areas of South & Southeast Asia.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season months of November to March, when birds congregate at foraging sites & water levels are lower, making subjects more accessible & visible.

Approach

Position yourself near known foraging sites such as rubbish dumps or wetland edges during early morning light for the most flattering & dramatic shots. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detailed close-ups of the bird's distinctive facial features & neck pouch without disturbing its behaviour. Incorporate the surrounding habitat - flooded fields or riverside mudflats - to provide environmental context & a stronger sense of place in your composition.
