Yellowstone National Park lies primarily within the state of Wyoming in the northwestern the United States, extending into small portions of Montana & Idaho. Sitting atop a vast volcanic plateau, the park is renowned for its geothermal features, but its ecological significance extends far beyond geysers & hot springs. The landscape is a mosaic of subalpine forest, wide open sagebrush valleys, rugged mountain terrain, & river corridors, including the iconic Lamar & Yellowstone valleys. This diversity of habitat, combined with relatively low human disturbance, has made the park one of the most important strongholds for large mammal populations in the contiguous the United States. Yellowstone’s wildlife is often characterised by its dramatic predator-prey dynamics & healthy populations of iconic megafauna. Bison & elk form the backbone of the park’s large herbivore community, often seen grazing across open valleys, while moose favour wetland margins & willow-lined streams. Bighorn sheep occupy the park’s steeper, rockier terrain, well adapted to precipitous slopes. Wolves & coyotes represent the park’s keystone predators, with wolves in particular drawing attention for their reintroduction & pack dynamics, while red foxes hunt more solitarily across open ground. Smaller & more elusive species round out the picture: otters & pine martens frequent riparian & forested habitats respectively, & the diminutive stoat can occasionally be spotted moving swiftly through undergrowth.
