Species profile
About this species
The Masai Giraffe is the largest subspecies of giraffe & is native to East Africa, found primarily in Kenya & Tanzania. It is distinguished by its irregular, jagged-edged brown patches on a cream background, giving it a more complex coat pattern than other giraffe subspecies. Adult males can reach heights of up to 5.9 metres, making them the tallest land animals on Earth.
Masai Giraffes are typically found in open woodland & savannah habitats, particularly areas with abundant acacia trees, which form a major part of their diet. They range across the semi-arid plains & bushland of Kenya & Tanzania.

Photography notes
The dry season from June to October is ideal, as vegetation is sparse & giraffes gather near water sources. Early morning & late afternoon offer the best light conditions for photography throughout the year.
Use a telephoto lens of at least 200mm to capture close-up portraits whilst maintaining a respectful distance from the animals. Shoot during the golden hours of early morning or late afternoon to take advantage of warm, directional light that highlights the texture of the giraffe's coat. Position yourself low to the ground when possible to capture dramatic compositions that include the full height of the animal against an open sky or acacia-dotted landscape.
