About this species
The Blue Wildebeest is a large antelope native to the grasslands & open woodlands of eastern & southern Africa. It is characterised by its distinctive bovine appearance, with a broad muzzle, shaggy mane, & curved horns found in both sexes. The species is renowned for its role in the Great Migration, where vast herds travel across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing.
Blue Wildebeest are typically found in open grasslands, short-grass plains, & lightly wooded savannah regions across eastern & southern Africa, including the Serengeti in Tanzania, the Masai Mara in Kenya, & Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The best time to photograph Blue Wildebeest is during the Great Migration between July & October, when river crossings in the Masai Mara offer dramatic action. Early morning & late afternoon light provides warm, golden tones that complement the open savannah scenery.
Position yourself low to the ground to capture dramatic eye-level perspectives, particularly during river crossings where the action is most intense. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the movement of galloping herds & splashing water. During the dry season, focus on dusty landscapes to add atmosphere & depth to wide-angle herd shots.
