About this species
The Mountain Ringlet is a small, dark brown butterfly found at high altitudes across parts of Europe & the British Isles. It is one of the few Alpine butterflies found in Britain, where it is restricted to the Scottish Highlands & the Lake District. The wings display a distinctive row of orange-red bands containing small black eyespots, which help distinguish it from related species.
High-altitude grassland & moorland typically above 500 metres, often on damp, grassy slopes where mat-grass grows in the Scottish Highlands & Lake District

Late June to early August on warm, sunny days between mid-morning & early afternoon when the butterfly is most active at altitude
Approach slowly & carefully on steep hillsides as this butterfly is easily disturbed by sudden movement. Overcast but bright conditions often keep the butterfly resting on vegetation, making it easier to get close for a well-composed shot. A macro lens or extension tubes will allow you to capture fine wing detail & the subtle eyespot patterns without disturbing the subject.
