About this species
The Northern Fulmar is a medium-sized seabird belonging to the family Procellariidae, closely related to petrels & shearwaters. It has a stocky build with stiff wings, a thick neck, & a distinctive tube-shaped nostril on its bill. Found across the North Atlantic & North Pacific, it is a highly capable glider that rides ocean winds with remarkable efficiency.
Open ocean & coastal cliff faces; breeds on rocky sea cliffs & offshore islands across the North Atlantic & North Pacific, spending the rest of the year far out at sea.

Photography notes
Late spring to early summer (May to July) during the breeding season, when fulmars are active at cliff colonies. Early morning offers soft light & frequent flight activity as birds return from feeding.
Position yourself at clifftop nesting colonies during the breeding season to capture fulmars gliding at eye level on updrafts. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the bird's wing motion against dramatic coastal backdrops. Overcast light conditions can reduce harsh shadows & bring out the subtle grey & white tones of the plumage.
