Best time

Late morning to early afternoon during June & July when adults are most active & the species is at peak flight season. Warm sunny days with light winds are ideal for locating & photographing resting or feeding individuals.

Approach

Approach slowly & from a low angle to capture the intricate underwing pattern when the butterfly rests with wings closed. Use a macro lens in the 90-105mm range to fill the frame while maintaining a comfortable working distance from the subject. Overcast conditions can reduce harsh shadows & allow the subtle pearlescent markings on the underwing to be rendered more accurately.
