Species profile

About this species

The reindeer, known as caribou in North America, is a large deer species found across Arctic & subarctic regions. Both males & females grow antlers, making them unique among deer. They are highly adapted to cold climates, with thick double-layered coats & broad hooves suited for traversing snow & ice.

Habitat

Arctic & subarctic tundra, boreal forests, & mountainous regions across Scandinavia, Russia, Canada, & Alaska. They favour open terrain with access to lichen, their primary winter food source.

Best time

Autumn during the rut in September & October offers dramatic behaviour, while winter months provide striking snowy landscapes. Early morning & late afternoon light is ideal year-round.

Approach

Shoot during the golden hour when low Arctic light casts a warm glow across the herd & highlights the texture of their fur. Position yourself downwind & at ground level to capture intimate portraits without disturbing natural behaviour. In winter, use exposure compensation to prevent the camera from underexposing against bright snow backgrounds.

Trips featuring Reindeer

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Reindeer is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Reindeer in Norway. During our photography holidays, the Reindeer is often photographed alongside Arctic Fox, Arctic Hare, Atlantic Puffin, Black Guillemot, Black-legged Kittiwake, & Common Eider. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include arctic wildlife.
