About this species
The Rock Ptarmigan is a medium-sized gamebird belonging to the grouse family, found across Arctic & subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is renowned for its remarkable seasonal plumage changes, transitioning from a mottled brown & grey in summer to almost pure white in winter as effective camouflage against snow. This hardy bird inhabits rocky alpine & tundra environments and is well adapted to extreme cold conditions.
Rocky alpine tundra, high mountain plateaus, Arctic & subarctic moorland, and barren stony hillsides, typically above the treeline where low-growing vegetation & lichen-covered rocks provide food & shelter.

Late spring & early summer offer excellent opportunities when males display on rocky ridges, while winter provides dramatic shots of white-plumed birds against snowy landscapes. Dawn & dusk light in alpine environments adds warmth & texture to images throughout the year.
Approach slowly & carefully across open terrain, keeping a low profile to avoid startling the bird, as ptarmigan can be surprisingly tolerant of patient observers. Focus on capturing the seasonal plumage transitions - particularly the patchy intermediate stages in autumn & spring - which offer visually striking & unique portrait opportunities. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain a respectful distance while still achieving sharp, frame-filling images against the stark mountain backdrop.
