About this species
The Southern White Admiral is a medium-sized butterfly found across central & southern Europe, characterised by its distinctive dark brown wings adorned with bold white bands. It is closely related to the White Admiral found in Britain & shares a similar elegant, gliding flight pattern. The species inhabits woodland edges & rides where its larval foodplant, honeysuckle, grows in dappled shade.
Deciduous woodland rides, clearings & edges where honeysuckle grows in partial shade, particularly in areas with a mix of open sunny spots & sheltered glades across central & southern Europe.

Late June to early August during the single annual flight period, with mid-morning on warm sunny days being optimal when butterflies are actively basking & feeding on bramble flowers.
Approach slowly & quietly when the butterfly is basking on sunlit leaves, as it will often remain still for extended periods. Use a macro lens or extension tubes to capture the intricate wing patterns, aiming for a shallow depth of field to isolate the subject against a soft background. Visit woodland rides on warm, calm mornings when butterflies are most active & less likely to be disturbed by wind.
