About this species
The Spotted Deer, also known as the Chital, is a medium-sized deer native to the Indian subcontinent. It is recognised by its striking reddish-brown coat covered in white spots, which it retains throughout its life. It is a highly social species, often found in large herds grazing in open grasslands & forest edges.
Spotted Deer are typically found in deciduous & semi-evergreen forests, open grasslands, & forest edges across the Indian subcontinent, particularly in areas near water sources.

Early morning & late afternoon during the cooler months from October to March offer the best conditions, as deer are most active during these periods & the light is ideal for photography.
Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture close-up portraits without disturbing the herd. Approach slowly & quietly from downwind, as Chital have an acute sense of smell & will flee if they detect human scent. Look for golden hour light in open meadows to highlight the texture & colour of their spotted coats.
