Swallowtail Photography Holidays

Papilio machaon

Explore our Swallowtail photography holidays in Bulgaria, built around field time with this species during the best seasonal conditions. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Swallowtail is Britain's largest native butterfly, recognised by its striking yellow & black patterned wings adorned with blue & red markings near the distinctive tail-like hindwing extensions. In the UK it is restricted almost entirely to the Norfolk Broads, where it depends on milk parsley as its larval foodplant. It is a powerful & graceful flier, often seen gliding low over fen habitats in warm sunshine.

Habitat

Freshwater fens & open wetland areas, particularly the Norfolk Broads in the UK, where milk parsley grows abundantly alongside dykes & reed beds.

Best time

Late May to June for the first brood, with a partial second brood in August; mid-morning to early afternoon on warm, calm & sunny days offers the best activity & light.

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 100mm to capture close detail without disturbing the butterfly during feeding or basking. Approach slowly & from a low angle to achieve an eye-level perspective that isolates the subject against a soft, blurred background. Shoot in bright but diffused light to bring out the vivid yellow & black wing colours whilst avoiding harsh shadows.
