About this species
The Tawny-browed Owl is a medium-sized owl native to South America, found primarily in Brazil, Argentina & Paraguay. It is characterised by its distinctive tawny-orange eyebrows, dark brown upperparts & pale underparts with brown streaking. This nocturnal species inhabits Atlantic Forest regions & is considered uncommon across much of its range.
Dense Atlantic Forest, including humid subtropical & tropical forest edges in south-eastern South America, particularly in Brazil, Argentina & Paraguay.

Dusk & dawn during the breeding season from August to November offer the best opportunities, as birds become more vocal & active during these periods.
Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture this owl without disturbing its roosting behaviour. A high ISO setting combined with a wide aperture will be essential for shooting in low-light forest conditions during dusk & dawn. Locate favoured roosting trees in advance & set up quietly to avoid flushing the bird before you have captured a usable image.
