Species profile

About this species

The Woodland Ringlet is a medium-sized brown butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae, found across central & eastern Europe into Asia. It displays characteristic dark brown wings adorned with a series of small ocelli - eye-like spots ringed with orange-yellow - on both fore & hindwings. It favours woodland edges, meadows & grassland habitats, often found at altitude in mountainous regions.

Habitat

Woodland edges, damp meadows & montane grasslands, typically at elevations between 500m & 2000m in central & eastern European mountain ranges including the Balkans & Carpathians.

Best time

Early July is excellent for this species in Bulgaria, coinciding with the Bulgarian Mountain Butterfly Macro trip. Warm mornings between 9am & 11am when the butterfly is basking but not yet fully active offer the best opportunities for close approach.

Approach

In the Bulgarian mountains during early July, look for individuals basking on low vegetation or grass stems in the morning sun when they are less active & easier to approach. Get down to ground level with a macro lens to capture the intricate ocelli detail & the rich texture of the wing scales against natural backgrounds. Overcast conditions can be ideal as the butterflies remain still for longer periods, allowing careful composition & sharp focus on the eye spots.
