The Taku River wilderness sits far beyond roads, settlements, & routine travel. Mountains rise sharply from braided rivers, forests stretch unbroken in every direction, & human presence is reduced to a handful of structures set carefully into the landscape. Access is by helicopter only, reinforcing the sense of separation from the outside world & placing photographers directly into one of North America’s largest intact watersheds.

Grizzly bears dominate this environment. They move through camp areas, along riverbanks, & across open ground with confidence, shaped by seasonal food sources rather than human schedules. Bears are often encountered fishing, foraging, resting, or interacting with one another, offering extended opportunities to photograph behaviour rather than fleeting appearances. Other wildlife, including Bald Eagles & occasional wolves or moose, add context to a landscape defined by predator-prey balance.

This trip is built around presence rather than pursuit. Days are unstructured by design, allowing photographers to respond to bear activity as it unfolds naturally around camp & viewing platforms. Small group sizes ensure quiet observation, clean sightlines, & the freedom to work angles & backgrounds without pressure. Experienced guidance focuses on reading behaviour, understanding tolerance distances, & working safely while remaining fully engaged with the photographic process.

Day 2 - Helicopter to camp, first bear photography session - transfer to Taku by Helicopter - overnight Taku Wilderness Camp

Travel Insurance – it is a requirement when booking on any wildlife photography holiday scheduled by NaturesLens that you have adequate travel insurance, we suggest a policy from TrailFinders or Campbell Irvine.

The Experience

Days begin before dawn with the sound of the nearby river & the possibility of bears already active around camp. The wilderness lodge provides comfortable single-occupancy accommodation with full board meals, creating a base camp atmosphere where photographers can focus entirely on their craft. Sessions run from early morning through golden hour, with the freedom to extend when conditions warrant or return to camp during harsh midday light.

The helicopter access eliminates physical demands while placing photographers directly into optimal habitat. This operational approach, refined through annual trips since 2026, ensures maximum time with subjects rather than travel logistics. The small group size allows for individual attention from David & Pui Hang Miles, who adapt each day’s plan to current bear activity patterns & photographic conditions.

Evening reviews provide opportunities to assess the day’s work & plan positioning for the following sessions. The remote location means complete immersion in the wilderness experience, where the rhythm of photography aligns naturally with wildlife activity cycles rather than external schedules.

Who This Trip Is For?

This trip suits intermediate photographers comfortable with longer telephoto lenses & wildlife behaviour anticipation. The physical demands are minimal due to helicopter access, making it accessible to photographers who prioritise image quality over adventure travel. Participants should be prepared for wilderness conditions & flexible scheduling based on bear activity patterns.

The technical level assumes familiarity with wildlife photography fundamentals including telephoto lens handling, appropriate shutter speeds for moving subjects, & composition techniques for both portraits & environmental images.

Recommended equipment includes a full range from wide-angle for environmental work through super-telephoto for detailed portraits, plus adequate backup & storage systems for intensive shooting days.

NaturesLens photography holidays do not include flights unless it is explicitly stated on the event page. When it is time to book your flights, we will send you the details in plenty of time to allow for bookings at the best available price.

The photography holiday itinerary is subject to change & is to be considered provisional.

NaturesLens photography holidays require a minimum number of participants in order to be viable. If this minimum number is not met, the photography holiday may not go ahead.

In the event that the minimum number for a photography holiday to go ahead is not reached, NaturesLens reserves the right to cancel any given photography holiday. In that event 100% of monies received will be returned. However, NaturesLens is not responsible for expenses incurred by its customers.

Not all mentioned wildlife can be observed & photographed at all times of the year, thus some activities may be considered seasonal & not available.

All personal luggage are the responsibility of the owner & we request that photography holiday participants limit their luggage to the equivalent of one suitcase, one flight bag, one camera bag & tripod. We do not wish to appear dictatorial in this matter & the request is made to ensure space & comfort for everyone in our vehicles.
