Brazil’s Atlantic Forest is one of the richest bird habitats on the planet, with a high concentration of endemic species found nowhere else. Our 8-day photography holiday in July 2027 is designed to give you close, productive access to the forest’s most photogenic residents from two well-positioned lodges.
July is the dry season, which matters for two reasons: clearer light for photography & more predictable bird activity, as species concentrate around reliable water & food sources.
What You’ll Photograph?
The Atlantic Forest supports an exceptional variety of colourful species. The primary targets include Red-breasted Toucans, Saffron Toucanets, Spot-billed Toucanets, Green-headed Tanagers & Black-cheeked Gnateaters — all endemic or near-endemic to this forest system. Beyond the headline species, tanagers, dacnis, woodpeckers & hummingbirds are all regular at the feeding stations & forest trails we work.
The forest canopy also supports primates, butterflies & occasional mammal encounters, so there’s productive variety between bird sessions.
Two Lodges, Two Habitats
We split the trip between two lodges in different altitude zones to maximise species variety.
The first lodge sits near the Serra dos Órgãos, where misty cloud forest trails give access to Green-headed Tanagers, Spot-billed Toucanets & a range of montane species. The second is in the Mantiqueira Mountains at a higher elevation, where cooler conditions bring a different species mix including the Black-cheeked Gnateater. Moving between the two means you’re not photographing the same birds in the same settings all week.
Working in Forest Light
Forest photography presents specific challenges — dappled light, dark backgrounds, fast-moving subjects in cluttered environments. Our guides know the forest well & can position you where the light works best. They’re also skilled at anticipating where birds will perch, which saves time & improves your hit rate. We’ll share practical approaches to exposure, composition & working with the conditions rather than fighting them.
What’s Included
The trip covers accommodation at both lodges, all meals, transfers between locations, park fees & guide services. The group is kept small for productive working conditions. You bring your kit & your flights; we handle everything else.
