Acanthis hornemanni

Explore our Arctic Redpoll photography holidays in Sweden, built around field time with this species during the best seasonal conditions. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Arctic Redpoll is a small, hardy finch found across the high Arctic tundra & subarctic regions of North America & Eurasia. It is distinguished by its pale, almost white plumage, streaked brown upperparts, and the distinctive red patch on its forehead. The species is closely related to the Common Redpoll & the two are often found together during winter irruptions further south.

Habitat

The Arctic Redpoll breeds on open tundra & scrubby willow & birch habitats in the high Arctic. In winter it moves to lower latitudes, frequenting birch & alder woodland, weedy fields, & open scrubland where seed sources are abundant.

Best time

Winter months from November to February offer the best opportunities, particularly during irruption years when flocks move south. Early morning light provides the most flattering conditions for capturing the bird's delicate pale colouring & fine plumage detail.

Approach

Patience is essential - locate feeding flocks at birch or alder trees where the birds congregate, allowing for close & sustained observation. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the birds' quick movements, especially when they are actively feeding or in flight. In snowy winter conditions, apply positive exposure compensation of around +1 to +1.5 stops to avoid underexposing the pale plumage against bright backgrounds.
