Species profile

About this species

The Pine Grosbeak is a large, robust finch found across boreal forests of North America, Europe & Asia. Males display striking crimson-red plumage with grey wings marked by white wingbars, while females & juveniles show olive-yellow or orange tones. They are relatively tame birds, often allowing close approach, & are known for their melodious, flute-like calls.

Habitat

Pine Grosbeaks inhabit dense boreal & subalpine coniferous forests, particularly those dominated by spruce, fir & pine. During winter they often move to areas with fruiting trees such as rowan, crabapple & hawthorn, and may venture into parks, gardens & orchards in search of food.

Best time

Winter months from November through February offer the best opportunities, particularly during irruption years when birds move south in search of food. Overcast days provide soft, even lighting ideal for capturing the vivid reds & subtle tones of the plumage.

Approach

Approach slowly & calmly as Pine Grosbeaks are often confiding and will tolerate close distances, allowing for detailed portraits. Focus on berry-laden rowan or crabapple trees in winter where these birds frequently feed, giving excellent opportunities for colourful, contextual shots. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/500s to freeze movement when birds are actively feeding or hopping between branches.
