About this species
The Common Redpoll is a small finch with a distinctive crimson forehead patch & a streaked brown plumage. Males often display a rosy-pink flush on their breast, particularly during the breeding season. They are highly social birds, frequently forming large flocks that move nomadically in search of food across northern & temperate regions.
Common Redpolls favour birch & alder woodland, scrubby heathland, and boreal forest edges. During winter irruptions they can also be found in gardens, hedgerows & open countryside where seed-bearing plants are abundant.

Winter months from November to February offer the best opportunities, as redpolls move south in large irruptive flocks & are more easily located at feeding sites. Overcast winter mornings provide soft, even light that brings out the subtle colours of their plumage without harsh shadows.
Approach feeding flocks slowly & use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture intimate portraits without disturbing the birds. Set up near birch or alder trees where redpolls feed on catkins, as they will return repeatedly to the same branches offering multiple shooting opportunities. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze their quick, agile movements & set your camera to burst mode to capture sharp images.
