About this species
The Bohemian Waxwing is a striking passerine bird with sleek, silky plumage in shades of grey, chestnut & pink, adorned with a prominent crest & vivid red waxy tips on its secondary wing feathers. It breeds across boreal forests of northern Europe, Asia & North America, undertaking irruptive winter migrations southward when berry crops fail in its northern range. The species is well known for its sociable nature & its fondness for berries, particularly rowan & hawthorn, which it often consumes in large flocks.
Bohemian Waxwings breed in mature boreal & taiga forests, favouring areas with open woodland & abundant berry-producing shrubs. In winter they roam widely across temperate regions, frequently appearing in urban & suburban settings wherever ornamental berry-bearing trees & shrubs are present.

Photography notes
Winter months - particularly December through February - offer the best opportunities during irruption years when flocks move south. Early morning light provides the most flattering conditions for capturing the warm tones in their plumage.
Focus on berry-laden trees such as rowan, cotoneaster & hawthorn during winter irruptions, as waxwings will return repeatedly to the same feeding sites, allowing for prolonged shooting sessions. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/800s to freeze the birds in flight or capture sharp detail in their intricate plumage while they feed. Position yourself with the light source behind you to ensure the rich colours & waxy wing tips are well illuminated, & use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a respectful distance without disturbing the flock.
