It inhabits shallow freshwater & coastal wetlands where it stalks prey with slow, deliberate movements. The species feeds primarily on fish, frogs, & invertebrates, using its sharp bill to strike with precision.

Habitat

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon provide the softest light & most active feeding behaviour. Spring & summer during the breeding season offer opportunities to photograph courtship displays & nesting activity, whilst winter months in southern coastal areas allow consistent sightings.

Approach

Approach slowly & remain low to the ground to avoid startling the bird, as it is easily disturbed whilst feeding. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detailed shots without encroaching on its space & disrupting natural behaviour. Shoot in burst mode during feeding activity to capture the precise moment of a strike, & position yourself with the light source behind you for well-lit, sharp images.

The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Little Blue Heron is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Little Blue Heron in the United States.
