About this species
The blue coua is a striking, non-parasitic cuckoo endemic to Madagascar, recognised by its vivid cobalt-blue plumage & bare blue facial skin around the eye. It is a relatively large bird, measuring around 48-50 cm in length, with a long tail & strong legs suited to moving through dense vegetation. It feeds primarily on insects, small lizards & fruit found in the forest understorey.
Found primarily in humid rainforests & forest edges along the eastern coast of Madagascar, as well as in some areas of dry deciduous forest in the north & west of the island.

Photography notes
Early morning hours shortly after dawn offer the best activity & light. The dry season between April & October is generally preferred as reduced foliage improves visibility within the forest.
Spend time in the early morning when the bird is most active & moving through lower branches, making it easier to spot & frame. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detail without disturbing the bird, as it can be skittish in heavily visited areas. Pay attention to the background & try to position yourself so the vivid blue plumage contrasts against darker forest foliage for a more impactful image.
